CoCT and Sanral to raise highway centre barriers to curb N2/R300 attacks

Motorists and police officers are falling prey to fast-acting criminals on the sides of the R300 and N2 highways.

The City of Cape Town is putting measures in place to enforce security on the R300 and N2 highways where motorists and even police officers are falling prey to fast-acting criminals.

Mayco member for safety and security Alderman JP Smith says police enforcement was never proposed as the only solution as the area is large, the crimes are quick, and the numbers of law enforcement required would be unrealistic. He explains an engineering solution was always proposed to work hand-in-hand with policing.

He says the City has discussed the issue with Sanral and decided to increase the height of the barrier in the centre of the roads so that people are unable to cross over as easily.

There are plans to repair the side barriers or replace with more robust permanent side barriers in place as well.

At the moment we have a lot of people that are walking and straying on the highways that it becomes difficult to watch the ones that are going to commit the offence.

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security - City of Cape Town

If you are reducing the number of people walking along that road you make it easier to target the ones who are there for wrongful purposes to rob and kill people.

He says he has had numerous meetings with Sanral over the years to implement these plans.
