'I have never seen such a concerted effort by the ANC to bury someone's career'

DA MP Diane Kohler-Barnard says the ANC will stop at nothing to remove Ipid's Robert McBride and stop his contract being renewed.

DA Member of Parliament Diane Kohler-Barnard describes how she walked out of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police meeting scheduled to finalise its report on the renewal of Ipid head Robert McBride's contract.

She says she believes members were working together to fabricate lies in order to tarnish McBride's career and reputation.

Now they are saying there is a massive investigation on the way by the Public Protector.

Diane Kohler-Barnard, DA MP

I have never seen such a concerted effort by the ANC to bury someone's career.

Diane Kohler-Barnard, DA MP

Kohler-Barnard believes the squabble is about McBride stopping R45 million from going to the ANC fraudulently and now it is trying to remove him because of his anti-corruption stance.

She says at the time, she wasn't party to McBride's appointment because of his arrogance but feels he has proven to be good at his job over the years.

Stopping money from going to the ANC is going to be a career limiting move no matter what you do.

Diane Kohler-Barnard, DA MP

So they decided now that he must go. This is a person who fought for liberation, he was on a death row and now they are treating him like a criminal.

Diane Kohler-Barnard, DA MP

It is not fair, it is not right and it is not how this committee has performed ever in all the years I've sat on it.

Diane Kohler-Barnard, DA MP

She says she has no doubt that McBride's contract will not be renewed. She believes a legal battle is imminent following today's events.

Executive Director at Corruption Watch, David Lewis says as an organisation it is not pro McBride but crtiticises the process that has been followed.

Looking at the committee's proceedings, I didn't get the idea that this is a serious attempt to apply their minds to the questions that they have to answer now, whether or not to extend his contract.

David Lewis, Executive director - Corruption Watch

This is not a job where you should be judged by whether you are popular with the police or not. It is by definition, one in which enemies would be made.
