State Capture Inquiry

Mbalula told NEC that Guptas said he would be sports minister testifies Manuel

Former finance minister, Trevor Manuel has taken the stand at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture on Thursday.

Manuel in 2017 wrote a column for the Daily Maverick describing how the African National Congress (ANC) NEC leader Fikile Mbalula confessed that Atul Gupta informed him that he would be appointed sports minister.

EWN reporter Clement Manyathela is following this story and says Manuel got to the crux of why he is testifying.

Which is to explain what happened during that infamous 2011 ANC NEC meeting, where he says Fikile Mbalula stood up and was concerned about the influence that the Gupta family has on the then president Jacob Zuma.

And also told us in the NEC meeting that Mbalula was called to come to the Saxonworld compound and told by one of the Gupta brothers that he would actually be appointed the sports minister.

Manuel says Mbalula was not raising an ideological issue. He was just angry and very emotional about the kind of responsibilities that he thought were to be expressed by the president of the country and was disappointed that an external family was the one telling him that he would be appointed a minister.

Clement Manyathela, Reporter - EWN

He adds that what Manuel came to do at the commission was to merely confirm what he wrote in the Daily Maverick piece about the meeting in 2011.
