Churches not exempt from bogus leadership - nor is government, says theologian

Theologian and analyst Prof Tinyiko Maluleke says both South Africa's political and religious sectors are fraught with toxic and bogus leadership.

Maluleke describes toxic leadership in the church as pastors who thrive on humiliating others and displaying power.

He says these pastors often believe that they have some secret knowledge and special abilities.

From eating grass and drinking petrol, to having insecticide sprayed on them, Maluleke says church congregants are often subject to a great deal of humiliation.

He adds that there is a great deal of physical and financial harm caused by these churches and toxic leaders.

Toxic leaders are those who centralise power and think they have secret knowledge and special abilities.

This week, President Cyril Ramaphosa said there was no place for bogus religious leaders in South Africa.

Ramaphosa's comments come after a controversial video showing Pastor Alph Lukau 'resurrecting' a man in a coffin at his church in Sandton on Sunday.

Maluleke has warned Ramaphosa to watch out for bogus leaders in the church and in the government.
