[LISTEN] Why breast milk is best
Breast milk contains the right number of calories which helps a baby grow at the right pace.
This is according to Naked Scientist Chris Smith.
He says the composition of breast milk changes as the baby develops.
When the baby is first born, the first taste of breast milk it gets is colostrum. Colostrum is very poor in calories but very rich in antibodies and other trace elements secreted especially by the mother. So that dose of colostrum is very important for helping to set up the future microbial health of the intestine.Chris Smith, Naked Scientist
The other thing about breast milk is that it contains the right number of calories which helps the baby grow at a sensible rate.Chris Smith, Naked Scientist
The other thing that breast milk is good at is its pre-warmed, then it is sterile, which means its perfect with all of the nutrients in the right way.Chris Smith, Naked Scientist
Smith also explains why there are several different types of formula provided for a specific age group.
When we make these formula feeds we are making an approximation to what we think the baby needs and that is why you have to change this with the baby growing because growing babies need enormous amounts of energy. They can burn of 30 or 40 percent of the calories they take in in a day just trying to grow and as babies grow bigger, they grow faster.Chris Smith, Naked Scientist
