The Council for Geoscience confirms that a tremor occurred near Harmony Mine in Doornkop, West of Johannesburg.

Chief Scientist for Council for Geoscience, Eldridge Kgaswane has confirmed that a 3.8 magnitude tremor was recorded near the Harmony mine in Doornkop, in the western region of Johannesburg.

The tremor occurred at 6:56am on Friday morning and Kgaswane says it not clear whether this incident was mining-related.

We are not dismissing that it could be mining-related because this has been an are of mining seismicity for more than hundred years. However, at this point, we think it is best we put it to further research and investigations.

Eldridge Kgaswane, Chief Scientist - Council for Geoscience

He says although this incident does do not point to illegal mining activities, there are suspicions of these activities taking place on these mines.

It is not clear at the moment if an aftershock will happen, says Kgaswane.
