UN ruling demands Britain cede control of its last African colony

A significant ruling by the International Court of Justice may effectively conclude what has been a decade long legal fight by Mauritius and the former residents of the Chagos Islands to return sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

Britain detached the Chagos Islands in 1965 during the decolonisation process, declaring it British Indian Ocean Territory and forcibly removing its descendants.

Africa Editor at Mail & Guardian Simon Allison shares more on the judgement and what this means for the island.

I think Mauritius of course will be very happy but also Britain probably won't be too phased because this judgement was only of advisory value, it was not binding whatsoever.

Simon Allison, Africa Editor - Mail & Guardian

It is unlikely that any real action is going to happen anytime soon.

Simon Allison, Africa Editor - Mail & Guardian

Talking to some of the Chagosians [descendants] themselves, they are saying they do not necessarily welcome this court ruling because they say they were actually never part of Mauritius either and what they want is some kind of self determination. They say this court ruling just hands them from one coloniser to another.
