'Mmusi's tweet is grandstanding and popularism ahead of election, says Eusebius
In the wake of a video surfacing online in which singer and dancer Bongekile 'Babes Wodumo' Simelane is allegedly beaten by her partner Mandla 'Mampintsha' Maphumulo, a tweet by DA leader Mmusi Maimane has had some negative reactions.
Responding to a Twitter user, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane said he would like to challenge Mampintsha in a boxing ring.
If Mampintsha has it in him, I’d challenge him to 3 rounds on a boxing ring. He must bring it on, violence against women must be condemned. A charge must be opened. It makes me sick this behavior.Mmusi Maimane, DA leader - on Twitter
Maimane's stance has landed him in a Twitter storm with people arguing he is perpetuating violence.
Mampintsha is out of control. How barbaric. https://t.co/iULa7AKUza— Mbali Ntuli (@mbalimcdust) March 4, 2019

I am gobsmacked by your tweet, your solution to this issue is violence. Remember this saying:Violence begets violence— Mahlomola (@PasemSi) March 4, 2019
But Mmusi! It's this very hyper masculinity that's the cause of abuse!— AntitheisticaLee ❤💚🖤 (@UnmovedLee) March 4, 2019
This "I'm a man, I'm stronger than you, I can beat you up, I'm provoked so I want to fix it violently" mentality that we are trying to highlight and Mmusi perpetuates it.
Toxic labantu called men.
Callers on The Eusebius McKaiser Show share their thoughts on whether Maimane is inciting violence or not. Caller John says he doesn't think that Maimane was inciting violence.
I think he was just standing up as a big brother, if Mampintsha doesn't want to fight Mmusi, I will raise my hand and request to go into the ring.John, caller
McKaiser says he disagrees profoundly with these statements.
Firstly, from a political point of view, I don't believe that Mmusi's Tweet is sincere, this is grandstanding and popularism ahead of an election.Eusebius McKaiser, presenter
He is simply trying to curry favour with Black Twitter and with black people in particular and trying to sound woke. I am not convinced that he is sincere at all.Eusebius McKaiser, presenter
The Mmusi that we know the theologian, the guy who is absolutely gentle, thoughtful, who is not quick of the mark, this Tweet is not consistent with his character.Eusebius McKaiser, presenter
Other callers agreed with Eusebius that violence is never the answer.
An emotional listener also named John related how he had adopted violence when discovering his daughters were being abused by men in their lives. He says he does have some regrets but described how his rage had overwhelmed him and resulted in him attacking the men.
