Victim blaming: An update on the Babes Wodumo case
Sonke Gender Justice has spoken out about the recent developments in the alleged abuse case involving Babes Wodumo and her long-term boyfriend, Mandla Maphumulo, popularly known as Mampintsha.
On Tuesday Maphumulo was granted R2 000 bail following an appearance at the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on charges of assault.
But while many have spoken out in support of Wodumo - real name Bongekile Simelane - others appear to be condemning the musician for not having left an abusive relationship.
Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane, Policy development and advocacy fellow for Sonke Gender Justice addressed the issue of victim blaming and shaming with John Maytham on Tuesday afternoon.
For me, it's always wanting to understand what is the underlying intent of that question.Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane, Policy development and advocacy fellow - Sonke Gender Justice
We know it's not easy [to leave]. Certain economic factors may hold women in these relationships. For women whose husbands and boyfriends are the breadwinners, they can't make that decision easily.Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane, Policy development and advocacy fellow - Sonke Gender Justice
We can't just ask women to leave and walk out the door and say everything will be hunky-dory.Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane, Policy development and advocacy fellow - Sonke Gender Justice
