#GoodNewsThursday: City of Joburg launches housing facility for the homeless

The City of Johannesburg has launched two affordable housing units in an aim to contribute to the City’s inner-city revitalisation initiative.

The initiative aims to convert dilapidated buildings into habitable mixed-sized residential units.

One of them is a transitional housing initiative to provide temporary housing for the homeless and working homeless people who earn an insufficient income to afford long-term housing.

The Fraser House transitional housing project came about because of a court order issued by the Constitutional Court in 2017.

Azania spoke to acting executive director for housing at the City of Johannesburg, Anthony Ngcezula, to find out more.

Temporary housing accommodation is not in the housing code of the country so it came about because there were a lot of people living in very bad buildings in the inner-city so to put them in a place that is more acceptable in terms of the constitution of the country, we were ordered to make this temporary accommodation for them.

Ideally we should be having partnerships with NGOs as well as corporate to assist the tenants to uplift themselves in terms of skills and maybe in a few months they are to access jobs which will make it possible for them to pay for formal or rental accommodation in the form of social housing.
