Barnard was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1998 for several crimes including murder and attempted murder.

Former apartheid-era death squad member and convicted murderer Ferdi Barnard has been granted parole as of April.

Justice Minister Michael Masutha made the announcement on Thursday.

Barnard was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1998 for several crimes including murder, attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice.

Masutha says Barnard will serve out the remainder of his term supervised by a community corrections officer.

Director at The South African History Arch Piers Pigou shares a brief history on the convicted murderer and his crimes.

Ferdi Branard is one of a handful of people that have been held accountable for violations perpetrated during the apartheid era. He has a notorious reputation as an assassin but he also was part of an organisation that we still don't know much about, the CCB - Civil Cooperation Bureau which was a covert unit of the South African Defense Force set up in the mid to late 1980's.

Piers Pigou, Director - The South African History Arch

Pigou says Barnard's parole opens the door to a lot of questions about the CCB.

What it did, who was involved and so forth. It is not an organisation that was just involved in a handful of incidents that we know about.
