Minister of State Security Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba says her department will adhere to the recommendations made by a report into SSA.

A high-level review panel was set up by President Ramaphosa in June last year, headed by Sydney Mufamadi, tasked to review the State Security Agency (SSA).

A redacted version of its findings was released on Saturday finding that there has been factionalisation and political malpurposing in the agency over the past 10 years.

The findings reveal that former president Jacob Zuma used the country’s intelligence services for his own political and personal interests, most notably against his successor.

To address the panel's findings, Minister of State Security Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba speaks to Bongani Bingwa.

She says she was not surprised by this high-level review panel's findings as she knew she had inherited a dysfunctional department.

Letsatsi-Duba says upon her arrival in this department in 2018, members of the department alerted her of the mess in the department.

They said to me, look here minister, you are inheriting a dysfunctional department, a department where there is lawlessness and the morale is low.

The outcome of the report did not come as a shock as it confirms what the same members in the department were saying to me.

She adds that the report presents an opportunity to correct what has happened and assist it to rebuild and construct a professional intelligence service.

This professional intelligence service will protect the country sovereignty and also the people of this country.

The report recommends that wherever there are any indications of wrongdoing and criminality must be handed over to law enforcement agencies. The department is busy with law enforcement agencies to make sure that people are held accountable.
