'Factions fed what they wanted to know, and not what they had to know'

State Security Agency SSA
Intelligence expert Jasmine Opperman talks about how the State Security Agency (SSA) was used to benefit the ANC.

A panel appointed to review the State Security Agency released a report on Saturday showing that former president Jacob Zuma and his cabinet used the country's intelligence agency to wage war within the ANC over the past decade.

President Cyril Ramaphosa established the panel in June last year, with Sydney Mufamadi and nine others leading the investigation.

Intelligence and terror expert, Jasmine Opperman says the politicisation of the intelligence agency is nothing new and is a worldwide phenomenon.

Has the ANC learned from this current report in order not to let it happen again, she asks?

The fact of the matter is that we had factions within the ANC during the Zuma period that has misused and abused the intelligence agency to the extent that we never had the intelligence agency during that period.

Jasmine Opperman, Intelligence expert

We had the senior national management structure that intentionally fed these factions with what they wanted to know, and not what they had to know, and this has led South Africa into a situation.

Jasmine Opperman, Intelligence expert

If we were to close down the State Security Agency today, will we miss them?

Jasmine Opperman, Intelligence expert

Zuma has taken to social media to respond to allegation stipulated in the report saying that he was never asked any questions by the panel, accusing them of having two well-known apartheid spies.
