'Court case about independent candidates will have no bearing on May elections'
A court bid to confirm the rights of individuals to stand for national and provincial elections independently has been postponed until later this month.
The Western Cape High Court is hearing the case, which could have significant implications for national elections going forward.
The little-known New Nation Movement has argued that independent candidates should be allowed to stand to be elected for the provincial and national parliaments.
The matter has been postponed to March 27 and could be escalated all the way to the Constitutional Court.
Regardless of the eventual court outcome, law expert Pierre de Vos says it will not be possible to change the electoral system or Electoral Act before the upcoming elections in May.
