Packham asked colleague to cook up alibi on day wife went missing, court hears

A court has heard how murder accused Rob Packham asked a work colleague to lie about his whereabouts on the day his wife went missing.

The State called three witnesses on the second day of the trial against the alleged wife killer.

Packham's slain wife Gill disappeared in February. Her body was eventually found in her burnt-out car and her husband was charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice.

Packham has pleaded not guilty to all the allegations.

His former colleague Lodewyk van Rensburg took to the witness stand on Tuesday in the Western Cape High Court, reports EWN's Shamiela Fisher.

Van Rensburg says Packham phoned him after midday on 22 February 2018 and asked him to say that they were in a production meeting together that morning.

Packham also apparently asked his colleague to make sure that their conversation was not overheard by anyone else.

Van Rensburg said he agreed to do it because Packham was the general manager [his boss] and because he seemed worried about the whereabouts of his missing wife.

Another work colleague and a police officer also testified about the day Gill Packham went missing.
