[WATCH] California governor halts death penalty in groundbreaking move

California governor, Gavin Newsom has ordered an executive moratorium on the death penalty. This is a reprieve for all people sentenced to death in California.

No sentences will be commuted. The order will not alter any current conviction or sentence or lead to the release of any prisoner currently on death row.

737 inmates are currently on death row in the state.

He says he made the decision 'with a heavy heart' and 'deep appreciation of the emotions that drive this issue'

'We don't have a right to kill', he says and will no longer support the death protocol 'and as I speak we are shutting down and removing the equipment in the death chamber in San Quentin - symbolically and substantively to send a message that we are better than this.'

He cites a National Acadamy Science Report that estimates 1 in 25 people on death row is innocent.

He tweeted:

Donald Trump was not thrilled...
