Sapu says it will not stop members going on strike if they choose

The South African Polic Union (Sapu) representing police officers met with Police Minister Bheki Cele to find solutions to Saps members who feel aggrieved at the recent promotions.

The members are threatening to go on a national strike if their grievances are not addressed.

Sapu secretary Mpho Kwinika says the meeting with the minister offered no solutions but was rather an explanation about what occurred prior to these promotions.

He says the minister has committed to embarking on a national campaign to try and explain to members why certain decisions were taken.

I don't think this is going to assist him because he took a good decision last year and we appreciate that decision but the implementation of that decision is what is hurting most of the police officials.

Mpho Kwinika, Secretary - Sapu

The union will be meeting with its members on Thursday afternoon to determine whether the strike will go ahead or not.

Sapu does not support that the members go on strike but we support a mechanism that will be able to find solutions to the current problem which we have.

Mpho Kwinika, Secretary - Sapu

But if the members say they want to go to the highway we will have no option but to support them when they go to the highway.

Mpho Kwinika, Secretary - Sapu

Kwinika says the police commissioner needs to account for the decisions made because those serving in Saps for fifteen years without promotions is unfair.

To keep police officers waiting for promotions for eleven years and then you promote people with two years in the service is totally unfair.

Mpho Kwinika, Secretary - Sapu
