In his testimony, the former minister revealed that he visited the Guptas eight times, six times as a deputy minister and twice as a minister.

Nene added that these visits were a lapse of judgement.

ENCA reporter Erin Bates, who is following the commission, says Nene has responded to his political detractors and provided insight on why he resigned as finance minister after his lies were exposed.

Nene said he was ambushed by the questions during his interview with eNCA prior to his testimony at the Zondo Commission.

And also saying that there was a lot of heat on him as he came to the commission last year in October and he thinks - this is his speculation- its because he had to make a decision as newly appointed finance minister to put VBS into liquidation.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) he named Julius Malema and Floyd Shivhambu as being aggrieved at that decision and then he became a target of a concerted political campaign.

Nene cited one of the reasons he resigned was because he wanted to make life easy for President Cyril Ramaphosa.
