A one of a kind WhatsApp news channel launched #SMWX

Activist and author Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh has launched the first SA's innovative WhatsApp news channel to tackle in-depth conversations ahead of the national elections.

The channel, which has already received 5 000 subscribers in the first two days of its launch, aims to bring viewers face-to-face with the concerns of South Africans.

Mpofu-Walsh will be offering subscribers opinions, analyses and interviews about the election from a youth perspective.

He speaks to Eusebius McKaiser about the new platform - The Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh Xperience (#SMWX) and what it aims to achieve.

Because so many messages are sent to young people all the time if it is going to be a media message or a political message it needs to compete ecstatically first.

We film in HD everywhere we go, we document our process, we put it on Instagram immediately and through our WhatsApp community, we are able to send out these videos and images to your phone instantly.

Mpofu-Walsh says young people are not represented in the media space and his platform aims to navigate that by getting the youth involved.

There is this huge appetite amongst the younger audience for news and for political analysis but nobody is serving it to them.

Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, Activist and author

It is a crucial demographic in our country and it is so important that it bears the disproportional brunt of our failures and filling that niche is crucial.

He says the platform has grown beyond his expectation with the latest number of subscribers sitting at over 7000 since it launched on Sunday.

It is spreading like a wildfire and I hope everyone is going to be joining the conversation on WhatsApp.
