ANC disregarded its own policies when drawing party list - Melanie Verwoerd

Political analyst and former ANC MP Melanie Verwoerd looks at the build-up to the elections the controversial ANC party list.

It is now 50 days left for the 2019 general elections. It will be the sixth election held since the end of the apartheid system in 1994.

Political analyst Melanie Verwoerd, a former ANC MP and SA ambassador to Ireland, speaks to CapeTalks Kieno Kammies about the build-up to the elections the controversial ANC party list.

She says the top 25% of every list (regional, provincial and national) stays the same and the party juggles the rest to reflect gender and youth.

The ANC has criteria which they send out to branches in which they look at constitutional requirements.

Their own criteria also say they can have no history of ill-discipline or corruption and I think that should cancel out a couple of them on the list.

It also says no history of involvement in fostering division or conflict yet there is Supra Mahumapelo right in the top 100.

It is interesting that the ANC couldn't really abide by their own criteria.
