The first witness in the Timothy Omotoso trial, Cheryl Zondi held a press conference on Tuesday to express her views about the recusal of Judge Mandela Makaula from the trial proceedings.
Makaula recused himself on Friday after it emerged that some of the state witnesses stayed at a guesthouse owned by his wife.
CRL Rights Commission chairperson Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva says Zondi was devastated by the news that Makaula has recused himself.
She is a very strong young woman and she feels she needs to do this because the truth will never change colour.— Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, CRL Rights Commission chairperson
We need to be realistic. She can be strong, but she has her good days and bad days.— Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, CRL Rights Commission chairperson
Mkhwanazi-Xaluva says Zondi is ready to go to trial again and present her testimony.
She says many victims came out in support of her and she does not want to let them down.
She is prepared to go through second victimisation and traumatisation. She has the support of her family, the foundation and of South Africans.— Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, CRL Rights Commission chairperson
She wants to tell her story and she is capable of doing that.— Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, CRL Rights Commission chairperson
One thing Cheryl knows is that she has no control over what the defence lawyer asks but she has control over how she responds to that.— Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, CRL Rights Commission chairperson
