Prof Mary Metcalfe is one of the signatories of an open letter penned to the African National Congress (ANC).

Prof Mary Metcalfe is one of the signatories on an open letter penned to the African National Congress (ANC), raising questions about the 'suitability' of some of the candidates included in its Parliamentary list.

In the letter that was published this week, a group of ANC elders insist that those mentioned in the ANC list should be 'above ethical reproach'. They have come out against the nomination of those implicated in acts of corruption - especially state capture.

Speaking to Joanne Joseph on the Afternoon Drive, Metcalfe suggests that while some members are still being investigated, their integrity has been compromised.

If we are going to renew the ANC and solve the problems that it is facing in terms of allegations of corruption, we need to send a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated by South Africans in government or any part of our lives.

Prof Mary Metcalfe

Metcalfe says those who have been accused of corruption should step down.

Not being convicted of a crime, is not an adequate criteria for an elections list.

Prof Mary Metcalfe

There are many South Africans who believe that this is the appropriate course of actions, that it is the individual whose integrity has been questioned, who need to lead from the front and say we will step down.
