New investigative directorate not just a duplication of the Scorpions - analyst

Political analyst, Prof. Ntsikilelo Breakfast says the new investigative directorate will consolidate efforts to fight corruption.

An investigative directorate that has been set up within the office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions has been criticised as duplicating and resurrecting the Scorpions, a unit disbanded by former president Jacob Zuma.

President Cyril Ramaphosa stated the directorate will look into corruption, fraud, and theft.

Political analyst, Prof. Ntsikilelo Breakfast believes the unit is going to be different from the Scorpions.

Since President Ramaphosa came into power he has been on a mission to wage war against corruption within the state machinery.

Prof. Ntsikilelo Breakfast, Political analyst - Stellenbosch University

I think the rationale is to consolidate his effort to fight against corruption and to also nip the case of state capture in the bud.

Prof. Ntsikilelo Breakfast, Political analyst - Stellenbosch University

Breakfast believes Ramaphosa's leadership style is 'different' and he is committed to fighting corruption.

The unit is not going to be just a duplication of the Scorpions, explains Breakfast.

If one looks at our security architecture for the past nine years under Jacob Zuma, it was basically not functioning well.

Prof. Ntsikilelo Breakfast, Political analyst - Stellenbosch University

Of late there's been a major shake-up trying to correct the wrongs of the security apparatus of the state. This should be an initiative that is welcomed.
