Why network operators warn load shedding will hike data costs

Network operators say they spend millions on emergency power supplies and security for cellular towers across the country.

Network operators have warned that continued load shedding will limit their ability to keep data prices down.

Operators insist they spend millions on emergency power supplies and security for cellular towers across the country.

Eskom still continues implementing Stage 4 load shedding as it struggles to keep some of its power generating units online.

Business Insider reporter James de Villiers says network providers are struggling to keep towers connected to cell phones. This is because the towers run on battery back up so when there is load shedding it takes about 18 hours to recharge.

What happens with the current Stage 4 load shedding is that the power cuts happen so often that is difficult for the towers to recharge.

James de Villiers, reporter - Business Insider

Another thing we are missing is that vandalism and theft of the cellular towers doubles during load shedding, which means network providers will have to spend millions on security to protect these towers.

James de Villiers, reporter - Business Insider

De Villiers says he doesn't think the knock-on effect will be felt immediately as data pricing takes a number of elements into account.

But I think it's going to be in the next financial year or as load shedding continues. I don't think there's going to be an immediate effect.
