Public Protector: 'Classified' doc at centre of SSA spat obtained anonymously
The office of the Public Protector says it's yet to confirm the authenticity of an allegedly classified document at the centre of a spat with the State Security Agency (SSA).
Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane laid a criminal complaint against State Security Minister Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba in connection with the supposedly classified state document.
Mkhwebane claims Letsatsi-Duba is interfering with the functioning of her office.
The Public Protector has essentially accused the minister of undermining her authority and being in contempt of her.
According to reports last week, the minister opened a criminal case against Mkhwebane, accusing her of stealing information and violating the country’s security laws.
The document is apparently linked to an investigation into Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and his alleged violation of the Executive Members’ Ethics Act.
The spokesperson for the office of the Public Protector, Oupa Segwale, says the document was anonymously dropped off.
Segwale adds that Minister Letsatsi-Duba cannot comment on the status of the document which she herself has not seen.
The Public Protector is in confidential possession of a document which purports to be the one we are looking for from the minister.Oupa Segwale, Spokesperson - Office of the Public Protector
As things stand, we do not know if that document is authentic.Oupa Segwale, Spokesperson - Office of the Public Protector
Neither the Minister nor the Inspector General of Intelligence have thus far confirmed the authenticity of that particular document.Oupa Segwale, Spokesperson - Office of the Public Protector
