Mozambique death toll rises to 417 as relief efforts continue

Mozambique's Land and Environment Ministry says the death toll in the wake of Cyclone Idai has risen to 417.

At least 15,000 people are still missing.

EWN's Christa Eybers is in the the port city of Beira, where the cyclone made landfall last week.

The city mayor has actually requested a cleanup, to start cleaning up the city.

The areas that are worst affected are obviously the outlying areas and they are still being helped by air and by boat now.

On Thursday we heard that only the trauma unit of Beira's hospital is still functioning because of damage caused by flooding.

Eybers says disaster relief organisation Gift of the Givers has stepped in, but more help is still needed.

The director of the hospital told us they are in dire need of some assistance. The Gift of the Givers from South Africa are helping them repair this roof but we are not sure how long it will take.

It is really like a ghost hospital in there.

The patients are sitting outside because they can't actually take anybody in at the moment who is not very serious.

She reports that relief efforts are intensifying.

What we are seeing every day now is more aircraft coming in and especially cargo aircraft, just carrying supplies - water obviously, food, because some of these people are stranded.
