Two African National Congress (ANC) KwaZulu Natal mayors linked to political killings in the province are expected to appear in court on Monday.
Newcastle Mayor Ntuthuko Mahlaba was arrested over the weekend in connection with the death of the youth league's regional chairperson Wandile Ngubeni in 2016.
Harry Gwala District Municipality Mayor Mluleki Ndobe was nabbed last Monday in connection with the murder of Sindiso Magaqa.
The ANC in the province has since expressed disappointment in both arrests and said it will wait for law enforcement agencies to do their job.
Political analyst from the Xubera Institute Xolani Dube says there are mixed feelings towards the ANC's stance on the two arrests.
Even though something is happening, we are cautious that the party's reaction could be seen as electioneering so that it is seen as doing something when it comes to crime and political killings.— Xolani Dube, Political analyst - Xubera Institute
He adds that South Africans must let the courts be the final arbiter in both these cases.
