'We will implement fines to residents who don't comply with water restrictions'

Level 1 water restrictions have been implemented in Johannesburg after Gauteng’s most prominent water source, the Vaal River, fell below 70%.

To address the level 1 restrictions, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Environment and Infrastructure in Johannesburg Nico de Jager speaks to Thembekile Mrototo.

We believe that the water restrictions are bearing fruit and we have to step up in keeping those restrictions in place by executing fines for residents who don't comply with the restrictions.

Nico de Jager, MMC - Environment and Infrastructure in Johannesburg

I was driving in a more leafy suburb yesterday, and I saw how many residents were watering their gardens outside their required times.

Nico de Jager, MMC - Environment and Infrastructure in Johannesburg

Therefore we are going to have to start with the strict approach and residents are going to have to bear the brunt for not adhering to the restrictions.
