Deputy general manager at PSA Tahir Maepa says Sars rejected the CCMA brokered wage agreement and forced the unions to strike.

Sars workers belonging to the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) and the Public Servants Association (PSA) are set to go on a strike on Thursday.

This is after no wage agreement was reached between the unions and Sars.

Speaking to Ray White on #702Breakfast deputy general manager at the PSA, Tahir Maepa says the failed wage negotiations have been going on since August 2018.

We almost got to a conclusion on Monday with the national commissioner where there was a consensus that we are going to take the CCMA brokered proposal as the basis of taking the negotiations forward.

Unfortunately, when we met in the evening, Sars reverted from that understanding back to their initial position.

Tahir Maepa, Deputy general manager - PSA

He explains that the union has demanded 11%, but Sars' initial position was a 7% offer on a single term agreement or alternatively an 8% offer with a multi-term agreement with employees in year two and three receiving CTI plus 1%.

We rejected this.

Tahir Maepa, Deputy general manager - PSA

He says the unions were willing to accept the CCMA proposal because Sars would not accept this it has forced them to strike.

At midnight on Wednesday, the union withdrew all customs officials.

This means no goods and services will enter the country...which will cost the country billions and frustrate a lot of businesses.

Tahir Maepa, Deputy general manager - PSA

The strike constitutes some 10 000 Sars employees, he explains.

Don't even bother going to Sars officers today because you won't be served.
