The Dis-Chem Foundation Donates R50 000 to Learning in Langa

The Dis-Chem Foundation in partnership with CapeTalk decided to assist the LEAP Science and Maths Centre which focuses on feeding the brains – and tummies – of primary school pupils in Langa. The centre will buy laptops and secure internet access with the R50 000 donated by the Dis-Chem foundation.

LEAP provides a safe environment in which the children study. Their attention seldom wavers, thanks to the school’s soup kitchen. Staffed by three teachers and one full-time IT technician, the school is accessible to youngsters from Siyabulela-, Moshesh- and Thembani Primary schools. CapeTalk PM Drive host, John Maytham, interviewed Lungiswa Gwaai from Leap. Gwaai says it’s essential the learners attending the science and maths centre are involved in community development projects to give back: “The centre started with a donation of a three containers that is now used as a study facility, a computer lab and a soup kitchen. This space has now become a multipurpose centre serving the Langa community Zone 17 area.”

Director of the Dis-Chem Foundation, Lynette Saltzman, explained supporting this hub was a no-brainer. “The Dis-Chem Foundation liked the centre because they are holistic in their approached and they understand what the community needs are.” The centre also opens its doors to community members living nearby every morning; the on-site IT technician then offers free training to those who do not know how to use computers.
