Eskom: Only stage one load shedding likely for winter

Public Enterprise Minister Pravin Gordhan on Wednesday announced that Eskom has a plan to avoid load shedding this winter and that if there was to be load shedding, it will at most only be kept at stage one levels.

Acting group executive for Generation at Eskom, Andrew Etzinger explains what plans are in place to make sure that Minister Gordhan's promises are fulfilled.

If we do go on load shedding, it will be for an hour or two. It won't be throughout the day messing up the economy.

Andrew Etzinger, Acting group executive for Generation - Eskom

We have additional capacity coming online before winter, which is great news. We have two massive generators that had huge problems last year which will be coming back into service.

We will be expecting a better performance from Medupi, and Kusile should be online before winter.

Eskom gets more power from the coal-fired power stations in winter than in summer and Etzinger says this will work in their favour.

He says engineers are working tirelessly to fix the leaking boiler tubes and hopefully they will also be running at full capacity in winter to avoid prospects of load shedding.
