Student claims universities denied him access due to technical subjects choices

Onke Sibeko recently matriculated from Delft Technical High School with outstanding results.

He received 72% for technical science but says he was not accepted to three universities due to his "technical subjects" not being recognised by those institutions.

His class was the first to do technical subjects at high school.

My dream was to go to university. If I have known I wouldn't have taken technical subjects. I would have gone to college a long time ago.

Onke Sibeko, Matriculant

Sibeko says he would like to do civil engineering but no one told him he wouldn't be able to get entry to a university with technical subjects.

The department was not honest from the onset. They did not tell students that technical subjects will not give you access to university. It's like they were using us to test whether the method would work.

Onke Sibeko, Matriculant

The student enrolment management unit at the University of the Western Cape has offered to meet with Sibeko to take him through other options available for him to further his studies.
