It's alleged that a child died on Friday morning during ongoing demonstrations in Caledon over housing, land and other issues.
This is according to Riemvasmaak community leader, Odwa Silimela.
Silimela says the child died after inhaling teargas that was fired into their informal settlements.
We lost a child this morning because of the police who were throwing teargas and rubber bullets. The child has died. Some other children are injured.— Odwa Silimela, Riemvasmaak community leader
On Thursday, two men died during the service delivery protests. Police watchdog Ipid confirmed that they were shot with live ammunition.
Community leaders have met with Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi and a delegation from the Theewaterskloof Municipality.
Silimela says officials visited the families of the deceased and discussed the funeral arrangements.
Meanwhile, residents have handed over a memorandum of demands to the municipality, which has been given seven days to respond.
They did bring the Red Ants this morning but we told them to allow us to do what we want to do. We are desperate. We need the land.— Odwa Silimela, Riemvasmaak community leader
Community members have marked out parcels of land they say they've been waiting several years for.
They have asked authorities to remove the police presence in the area and say they'll stop their protest action for now.
