Anecdotes abound of skilled South African of all races leaving South Africa in droves.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Angel Jones (CEO of Homecoming Revolution) and Johannes Wessels (Director at The Enterprise Observatory of South Africa).

Whitfield asked them what the actual numbers say, and if there is a reason for concern.

Time and again, emigrants mention the same reasons for why they choose to leave and return home to South Africa, says Jones whose firm specialises in bringing back to the Continent skilled Africans plying their trades abroad.

The number one reason why skilled South Africans are leaving is career prospects, says Jones.

The main reason why people return is heartache; they long for friends and family.

Estimates of the number of South Africans who live abroad vary widely from a low of around 900 000 to a high of about 2.7 million.
