2019 South African general election: Analysis and News

Mbalula deflects question on whether corruption-accused Magashule is ethical

African National Congress (ANC) elections head Fikile Mbalula says he is not in the position to comment on whether the party’s secretary-general, Ace Magashule, is an ethical leader or not.

Magashule is the latest political figure to be implicated in state capture allegations in a new book by investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh.

Speaking with Eusebius Mckaiser on 702, Mbalula says it is for the ANC's integrity commission to decide whether the secretary-general is ethical.

He adds that corruption claims made against Magashule and other leaders must be tested in a court of law.

At the same time, Mbalula has defended an old tweet where he seemed to imply that Magashule was corrupt.

Ahead of the ANC elective conference in 2017, Mbalula tweeted: '[Ace Magashule] is a definite no no no, the man will finish what is remaining of our movement. He will kill it.'

It is a critical tweet about an individual. As an ANC member I respect the fact that he [Magashule] is my SG now. My tweet was not mischief. It was a political engagement.

Mbalula maintains that political figures who allow their family members to unduly benefit from their political influence must be brought to book.

The ANC as a party does not condone looting and corruption.

When asked why South Africans should vote for the ANC, Mbalula says the party has brought stability to state organs such as police and National Prosecuting Authority.

He also claims the ANC has moved with speed to stabilise the economy and deal with allegations of corruption.

The elections head insists that the the ruling party is working to tackle load shedding and the crisis at Eskom.

We accept the criticism and we are on the mend.
