[LISTEN] Acne - the effects are more than just skin deep
According to a 2018 study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, acne is linked to a significantly increased risk of depression.
Paramedical dermal technician and somatologist , Najma Khan says for some people, it can affect their self-esteem so badly that they develop a crippling fear of leaving the house.
From a psychological point of view they feel ugly and feel like they have no support from an emotional point of view, as well as treatment. They find that it affects their school work and social life. They stay indoors and get depressed.Najma Khan, Paramedical dermal technician and somatologist
Much of Khan's work is around educating children and parents about acne. She says parents need to teach their children not to bully and to be confident enough to stand up against bullying.
What we have done is to educate kids in a very simple form. Making them understand what acne is, the genetics of acne and what can be done, also appealing to parents to be more sensitive. There are a lot of parents that ignore it. It is not part of growing up, you can do something about it. If you see your child has a problem, there is help out there.Najma Khan, Paramedical dermal technician and somatologist
