The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Basic Education Department says it has received a number of complaints about the increased abuse of Xanax by pupils.
MEC of Education in KZN Mthandeni Dlungwane says easy access to the drug is a cause for concern.
Dlungwane says while the issue is a societal matter, the department will send specialists to intervene.
He says the department is using every resource at its disposal to address the problem.
It is a worrying factor, even parents must be worried. We do not have a budget directed into [rehabilitation] but of course we have specialists in the system that can assist learners.— Mthandeni Dlungwane, MEC of Education - KZN
