The City of Cape Town says all law enforcement officers are on the scene where violent protests have broken out along the N2 in Somerset West.
A section of the N2 highway in Somerset West has been closed in both directions since Wednesday morning as a result of a land invasion.
The City's law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason says the road closures are in the area between Broadlands Road and Victoria Road.
Protesters have responded with violence after attempts to prevent them from occupying the privately-owned land.
Land occupants have pelting stones and burning tyres and police have been firing rubber bullets.
