Sudan military announces arrest of President Omar al-Bashir

Sudan's army says President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has been arrested after he was removed him from power on Thursday morning.

The country's Defence Minister, Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf announced that Sudan will be run by a military council for a two-year transitional period leading up to elections.

A three-month state of emergency has also been declared.

Ray White spoke to Wits Professor Gilbert Khadiagala about what is next.

What Sudan doesn't need now is another military leader to come to power.

Al-Bashir is gone but the power structure remains.

White asks Professor Khaidagala whether the country can expect acts of retribution.

You see it depends on the kind of arrangement he made with the opposition or the people that overthrew him.

It's also possible, says Khadiagala, that he will go into exile in Saudi Arabia.

Al-Bashir has been in power for 30 years.
