More schools are also being monitored, while the ongoing protests also affect public transport and healthcare services.

A total of 21 schools across the Cape have been closed as a result of two separate protests in Lwandle, Somerset West and in Khayelitsha.

A further eight schools are being monitored because of the disruptions, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has confirmed.

The department's Jessica Shelver says many learners from Lwandle and Khayelitsha, who attend schools in other areas, have also not been able to get to school.

The protests are causing massive disruptions with schooling.

Demonstrators in the Lwandle area are protesting over housing, amid attempts by authorities to thwart a land invasion along the N2.

Meanwhile, protesters in Khayelitsha say they won't back down until the City of Cape Town addresses their grievances, including water issues in the area.

MyCiti buses are not operating in Khayelitsha and other forms of public transport have also been affected, reports EWN's Kaylynn Palm.

Furthermore, healthcare services at the Khayelitsha District Hospital have been disrupted due to the ongoing protest action.

The staff members could not leave or enter the doors of the hospital so the facility is not able to assist residents.
