State Capture Inquiry

'McBride raised concerns about crime intelligence influence on Ipid'

Former Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) head, Robert McBride took the stand at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture on Thursday.

Before McBride's testimony could begin, a potential conflict of interest arose.

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa on #702Breakfast, eNCA Reporter Erin Bates says McBride stated Judge Raymond Zondo's brother, Advocate Mxolisi Zondo, presided over a disciplinary hearing of an Ipid employee whom McBride alleges was unlawfully fired.

He has given an opinion which is in contradiction or in conflict with the findings of Mxolisi Zondo over Shadrack Sibiya.

However, the inquiry's legal team cited that this information was relatively insignificant.

That is why Advocate Paul Pretorius presented three options to the chair which include recusing himself altogether from McBride's testimony, recusing himself from the evidence specific around Mxolisi Zondo's findings, or leaving the matter for the time being and perhaps referring it back to the president.

She adds that Pretorius made light of the matter but acknowledged it could be a conflict of interest that the chair may need to consider.

McBride testified that he was concerned about the influence crime intelligence had on Ipid's work.

What we hear from McBride's testimony is resistance to transparency from law enforcement agencies and the abuse of state funds, using the secrecy that those agencies enjoy to exploit state resources and commit corruption.

Erin Bates, Reporter - eNCA

McBride stated his frustrations, she reports.

It seems that because of the secrecy and anonymity these agencies enjoy, they can access a lot of resources and exploit and misappropriate them.
