Cape Town can experience flooding during winter caused by stormwater drain blockages.

The City of Cape Town's director for asset management and maintenance, Henry du Plessis outlines its readiness for winter and plans to keep stormwater drains clear.

March saw the start of the City's winter readiness programme to ensure the clearout of all stormwater inlets.

The programme is well underway and we are looking forward to the rainy season.

Du Plessis responded to reports that residents dump debris into the drain, including couches, old chairs, and dead animals.

There are few bad apples in our communities who are doing that.

We are informing communities through pamphlets as to what they can do to alleviate and prevent flooding.

What about leaves that fall into the drainage system as autumn sets in?

It is the responsibility of our neighbours and ourselves to ensure that we gather our leaves and put it in a bag for the waste department to remove.
