Exclusive Books incurred R30K damages from violent 'Gangster State' protest

Violent protests broke out at the Johannesburg launch of Pieter Louis Myburgh's explosive book, Gangster State, at Exclusive Books in Sandton City, Johannesburg on Tuesday evening.

The book focuses on the alleged dirty dealings of the ANC's Ace Magashule.

Exclusive Books CEO Grattan Kirk, speaks to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies about the damage incurred at the Sandton City book launch.

Damage in the order of R30 000 was done to our books and theft. There was no huge damage done to the property.

Kirk says it opened a case of malicious damage to property, intimidation, and theft at the Sandton police on Tuesday.

I have a case number and we have an investigative officer who is working on it.

Following Tuesday's events, the V&A Waterfront cancelled the planned Thursday Cape Town launch at Exclusive Books, but at the last minute, CapeTalk agreed to host it at Primedia in Green Point.

Kirk explains the decision to cancel the V&A Waterfront launch, saying the company felt it would not be able to control protests should they happen.

The police informed the facility's management that it was unable to offer any security support due to current service delivery protests in the Western Cape.

Therefore, it was recommended that we do not hold the event

Grattan Kirk, CEO - Exclusive Books

It was not an easy decision but with all the things put together, I really don't think I had much choice.

Kirk says a public launch of the book will be held on Wednesday for its Cape Town audience.
