No unroadworthy vehicles on our roads during Easter, warns City of Cape Town

Member of the mayoral committee (Mayco) for safety and security Alderman JP Smith outlines the city's plans for the Easter holidays to ensure safety on the roads.

He says their focus will be on a range of public transport, particularly the long distance vehicles.

We prevent people from loading passengers before the vehicles are tested for safety and if they don't pass we send them away to go and fix the problem. We can't put a price on human lives.

Smith says drunk driving is still a major problem no matter how much they talk about it and warn people not to do it.

Everybody talks about LeadSA but I think there are many motorists who couldn't careless.

It is not uncommon to find a taxi driver very early in the morning with a taxi full people being heavily intoxicated, six time over the legal limit and still pugilistic when you arrest him.

Smith encourages motorists not to touch the steering wheel if they've been drinking as it puts people's lives in danger.
