McBride makes claims about Nhleko in second day of testimony at Zondo inquiry

The former Ipid head has accused former police minister Nathi Nhleko of interfering in investigations.

Former Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) head, Robert McBride has accused former Police Minister Nathi Nhleko of interfering in investigations and undermining due process in order to fire him and senior IPID investigators.

McBride testified at the state capture commission of inquiry on Friday, with a focus on the investigation by law firm Werksmans.

The firm was appointed to investigate Ipid’s handling of the Zimbabwean renditions case, where senior Hawks officials were accused of orchestrating the arrest and unlawful deportation of a Zimbabwean suspect.

McBride told the commission that at one point, the former minister instructed Ipid investigator Innocent Kuba to co-operate with the Werksmans investigation.

He said that Nhleko later relied on an incorrect, preliminary Werksmans report to fire him and two investigators - including Anwa Dramat.

Eyewitness News Senior reporter, Barry Bateman has more on the story.

What we got into is the fine details of whether or not Nhleko knew at the time he acted against Dramat, whether he knew there were two reports. If we find the evidence and it is accepted by the commission, it shows that he was working toward an agenda.

This all goes to the whole idea of state capture - that they wanted to get rid of obstacles within the organisation who were conducting high profile investigations of politically connected individuals.

A conflict of interest has arisen as it has emerged that commission chair Raymond Zondo’s brother, advocate Mxolisi Zondo, presided over a disciplinary hearing of an Ipid employee whom McBride alleges was unlawfully fired.

The deputy chief justice says he will wait until he hears the evidence before deciding how to deal with it.

The submission from advocate Pretorius is that the allegations made against advocate Zondo are not of such a critical nature to the evidence provided by McBride.
