Direct flight from USA to Cape Town makes Mother City 'a serious contender'

James Vos, the Mayoral Committee member for Economic Affairs for the City of Cape Town speaks to Kieno Kammies about the direct flight between Newark (New Jersey, USA) and Cape Town.

It will be operated by United Airlines, and provide much-welcomed access to the North American market.

Vos says the City of Cape Town has been working on this with the Access Initiative, part of the Wesgro Trade and Promotion Agency

This is certainly going to be a game-changer for Cape Town and the Western Cape.

He says the North American market is one of the largest unserved markets for Cape Town.

This will certainly increase connectivity...It is a wonderful achievement and will really open up this market.

Research indicates this new opportunity can grow passengers coming into the Mother City by 24 000 year-on-year, with R283 million in direct tourism spend.

That equates to an additional 890 jobs for the Cape economy.

I think it's going to be smooth sailing.
