'If all the parties sit and work towards a plan, the Alex issue can be solved'

As the Alexandra crisis intensifies, Democratic Alliance (DA) shadow MEC for human settlements Mervyn Cirota speaks to Ray White on The Xolani Gwala Show about what happened to the Alexandra Renewal Project.

Cirota says in 2005 the Alexandra property owners association obtained an interdict which prevented development in old Alexandra.

Until such time as their rights to their properties had been resolved and provision is made for payment to property owners, the court order cannot be lifted and development cannot take place.

He adds that this is an issue that needs to be solved by the province and national treasury.

Cirota says those are the problems that hamper development. He believes that there needs to be a proper forensic analysis of what is happening in Alexandra.

We need to have some kind of structured way of not allowing people to willy-nilly move in because it impacts on infrastructure.

If all the parties sit down and have a plan and work towards a plan, this is what I think the residents of Alex are looking for.

To discuss another housing project that has not worked out, White speaks to News 24 journalist Alex Mitchley about what is happening in Mamelodi.

The Red Ants dispersed hundreds of Nellmapius people in Mamelodi East on Monday morning. They evicted them from unallocated vacant apartments.

There was essentially hundreds of tenants just on the side of the road in the vicinity of the apartment block with all their belongings.

Mitchley says the Department of Human Settlement obtained a blank eviction order in April.
