[LISTEN] Guardians turn to demons as kids fall prey in churches, schools

There is a spike in the number of child sexual abuse cases reported in schools.

In most cases, the perpetrators happen to be the teachers entrusted to protect the children.

Incidents in AB Xuma Primary and Parktown Boys, among others, made headlines about sexual abuse in the schools.

Women & Men Against Child Abuse hosted a conference to raise public awareness around Section 54 offences and the lack of enforcement thereof since not reporting child sexual abuse is a crime in and of itself.

Eusebius McKaiser spoke to two parents who shared the experience their children had in a school and in a church.

The perpetrator confessed to the pastor and the pastor orchestrated a meeting with the mother of the child. At the meeting, it was told to the mother by the perpetrator that I had your daughter here and I told her to take off her panties.

Ricky, Parent

The pastor never went to the police and reported the matter.

Ricky says the child was 10 years old when the incident happened.

On the other hand, Tim says he was shocked when a hockey club hired a known sexual predator and didn't consider the concerns of the parents.

A friend of ours made us aware there was a predator employed at the hockey club. The predator was meant to coach my daughter and when I approached the people I had entrusted my daughter with, they didn't seem to have a problem with it.

Tim, Parent

He was with my child for an hour and a half on the Saturday I found out and I immediately withdrew my daughter.

Luke Lamprecht, who is a manager at Big Shoes Foundation, says engaging the system in these kinds of cases is a futile exercise.

You would think that when you engage the system which is designed to protect children under our constitution, justice would actually flow naturally.

Luke Lamprecht, Manager - Big Shoes Foundation

The thing that the public must understand is that the power of abuse is in the silence.
