What you should know before replacing a tyre

Brent Lindeque runs a brand activation and events agency and is commonly known to South Africans as The Good Things Guy.

Lindeque took to social media earlier this month with a lengthy account of his experience at Tyger Wheel & Tyre in Fourways, Johannesburg, where he was conned into buying four tyres instead of one.

He says he had gone to the branch after noticing that he had a flat tyre and was helped by the assistant sales manager, who advised him the year-old tyre needed to be replaced because it was so badly punctured.

Lindeque was then told the branch didn’t stock the same brand of tyres currently on his car, and that he would need to replace all four tyres because his insurer Discovery would not cover it if the tyres were not identical.

Having paid a small fortune for four brand-new expensive tyres, Lindeque found out that the assistant sales manager had lied.

Pippa Hudson spoke to consumer journalist Wendy Knowler, who contacted Discovery Insure to find out what it prescribes to its clients about tyres.

The response was that Discovery Insure has no hard set rules in terms of tyres that it imposes on members besides that tyres must be roadworthy and advises that their clients rear tyres or both front tyres be identical for their optimal safety.

Knowler suggests that you take a very good look at your tyres. She says one in every 10 accidents in wet conditions are caused by worn tyres, according to Discovery Insure.

But even if you have an accident and the dry and worn tyres were not the cause, your insurer could very well reject your claim, especially if they were very badly worn.

A forensic accident investigator told me in the past week that tyres are worn down to the canvass several times a week in the cases he’s called in to investigate. The legal minimum thread requirement is 1.6mm for normal tyres, but it’s recommended that you change tyres before the thread is less than 3mm.

Tyger Wheel & Tyre said it has a number of forums for people to raise issues that they may have.
