2019 South African general election: Analysis and News

'If we give Ramaphosa a proper mandate, he will be able to execute'

University of Johannesburg (UJ) international relations scholar, Oscar Van Heerden, has written an article in the Daily Maverick urging South Africans to vote for the African National Congress (ANC) so that President Cyril Ramaphosa can continue with the clean-up campaign he has begun.

Van Heerden joins #702Breakfast's Bongani Bingwa to explain his reasoning.

Ramaphosa has implemented resolutions from the ANC conference. There has been a lot of swimming against the stream on the land issue, but he has been steadfast on that in terms of expropriation without compensation.

Oscar Van Heerden, International relations scholar - UJ

He has done several other things. There have been resolutions taken by the ANC, and Ramaphosa has made sure to say to people that these are resolutions, there are rationales behind them, and I think we need to implement them.

Oscar Van Heerden, International relations scholar - UJ

Everyone is aware that there are bad apples within the ANC, he adds.

But if we give Ramaphosa a proper mandate, he will be able to execute.

Oscar Van Heerden, International relations scholar - UJ

He says there is a constant battle within the governing party to ensure that there are good competent people in strategic positions to deal with corruption.

Everyone should go out and cast their votes for Cyril Ramaphosa because, with a strong mandate, none of these intended agendas by the undesirables are going to see the light of day.
